Benefits

The establishment of the Center for Chesapeake Bay Observation and Modeling (CCBOM) at USNA provides unique opportunities for the USNA faculty, staff and midshipmen to collaborate on Chesapeake Bay education and research activities. The motivation behind the formation of the CCBOM is the desire on the part of faculty from three academic departments to join a cohort of local universities in support of NOAA’s Chesapeake Bay Observing System (CBOS). The broad benefit will be to establish a major role for USNA in ocean science research and education in the Chesapeake Bay region in support of NOAA’s national objectives. More specific benefits will accrue to USNA faculty and students, through development of expertise in oceanographic field measurements and simulation, through incorporation of oceanographic observation and modeling in the curriculum, and through development of multidisciplinary funded research opportunities.
