Dr. Joseph M. Hatfield

Joseph Hatfield is a recently retired naval intelligence officer whose military experience includes extensive time providing intelligence support to combat operations overseas. He was the intelligence officer for Helicopter Squadron FIVE (HS-5) deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS EISENHOWER (2007-2009), supporting combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. He also worked as an intelligence officer at U.S. Africa Command (2009-2012), supporting a variety of missions throughout Europe and on the African continent. Additionally, he served as the department head for intelligence (N2) at Task Force SIX SEVEN (CTF-67) in Sigonella, Sicily (2012-2015), where he supported regional intelligence collection missions of national significance. From 2015-2024, he served as an active-duty military professor in the US Naval Academy's Cyber Operations department. He was awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal for his work during the 2011 Libya Crisis, where his intelligence analysis supported senior decision makers in the Department of Defense, the Department of State, and the President of the United States. He has also been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation and Achievement Medals, and six overseas service ribbons. After transitioning to civilian life in 2024, he now serves as Assistant Professor in the Cyber Operations department where he teaches courses on the technical fundamentals of cybersecurity, human factors in cybersecurity, and cyber warfare.
