Series 2: Diaries, Notebooks, and Scrapbooks, 1891-1971 Boxes 13-17
Series DescriptionDiaries, notebooks, and scrapbooks created and kept by Jackson throughout his U.S. Navy career and much of his retirement. The documents in the series serve to chronicle Jackson's daily routine, the activities of his duty stations and commands, and his personal interests and opinions.
The diaries, which span much of Jackson's life, consist mainly of line-a-day five-year diaries, composed of brief entries noting the daily weather, appointments, and occasionally, notable events. Jackson's first diary consists mainly of a journal kept during the South American cruise of U.S.S. Yorktown.
Several of the notebooks in the series, produced entirely during Jackson's naval career, serve as a personal reference source consisting of alphabetical listings of cruise itineraries, shipboard routine, and data related to subjects such as fuel consumption, fleet/ship expenses, and aviation in the Battle Fleet. Notebooks mainly from Jackson's time as a midshipman, including his cruise aboard the U.S.Str. Trenton from the May 2022 acquistion were incorporated in this series.
The scrapbooks, most of which have been disbound and are only partially extant, cover such topics as the Chilean Revolution, the torpedo boat destroyer U.S.S. Paul Jones, Jackson's climbing of Mount Rainier, the social calendar of the U.S. Battle Fleet, and the sinking of submarine U.S.S. S-4. Some of the material pertaining to the Chilean Revolution is in Spanish.
