Surface Warfare Officer - Nontraditional Career Options
During Service Assignment, MIDN at the Naval Academy may be selected into two SWO options upon commissioning. These unique career paths may be optionally excercised following the acquisition of a SWO warfare qualification and completion of a Division Officer Tour.
EDO
- EDO stands for Engineering Duty Officer. EDOs are career Naval Officers with advanced degrees who provide technical and business leadership to the fleet in areas such as design, acquisition, construction, maintenance and modernization. After completing a surface warfare qualification, officers can become EDOs through a mid-career lateral transfer.

METOC
- METOC stands for Meteorology and Oceanography. METOC officers specialize in all parts of meteorology, oceanography, hydrography, and precise time. Upon completing IWC school, METOC officers head to another school for a year learning everything about METOC. After finishing their training, METOC officers then work on a variety of platforms such as aircraft carriers, amphibious ships, and fleet weather centers.
