..Employment and Billet Information
Since its founding in 1845, USNA has prided itself on balance between civilian and military faculty and the Mathematics Department is no different. USNA Mathematics is the largest department at the Academy, with over 65 faculty members including approximately 40 civilians with doctorates, 20 military officers with advanced degrees and 5 adjuncts with distinguished experience.
There are a variety of positions at the Math department and each comes with its own set of requirements. This page should be a good starting point for anyone who wishes to be a part of our department. Links to original announcements and instructions on how to apply are provided.
Civilians
Full-time Tenure-Track
Civilian faculty positions are just like similar positions at other highly-ranked undergraduate liberal arts colleges with expectations of both excellence in teaching and in scholarship. The civilian promotion and tenure system at USNA mirrors that of other colleges, including granting of career tenure and the rank and promotion system. Previous military experience is not expected at all.
Requirements
- All civilian tenure-track faculty positions require a Ph.D. in mathematics, statistics, operations research, industrial engineering or related field at time of appointment.
- Additional requirements (including citizenship, experience and research speciality) will vary from position to position; see individual announcements for details.
How to apply
USNA Mathematics often has select openings for civilian tenure-track faculty during each academic hiring cycle. Positions to begin the following academic year are typically announced through the USNA Human Resources Office and MathJobs in July or August with applications due typically later sometime October through December. Applications for tenure-track positions should be exclusively submitted through MathJobs.
Adjunct Instructors
From time to time, USNA Mathematics hires Adjunct Faculty to fill teaching demands within the department. Adjunct Faculty are typically hired on a semester-to-semester basis as contractors and teach two courses per semester. Recent adjuncts have a wide-range of background and expertise and have included retired military, retired or quasi-retired scientists, career-changing professionals, local educators and doctoral candidates (“ABD”), among others. As with tenure-track jobs, no military experience is expected nor required.
Requirements
- Masters degree in a relevant field
- Teaching experience at any level.
How to apply
Interested parties should contact the department chair regarding their interests, qualifications and availability. When needs arise for an upcoming semester, qualified applicants will be contacted directly about opportunities.
Military
Rotational Officers
Officers with masters degrees in mathematics, operations research, statistics or other technical field are a great asset to the Mathematics Department. Military faculty in the department typically teach three classes each the semester in addition to summer school.
Rotational officers assigned to shore duty at USNA typically spend one year in graduate education elsewhere (if necessary) followed by two to three years of teaching at USNA.
How to Apply
There is no uniform method to apply. Application procedures may vary between the Navy and the Marine Corps and even from community to community. Select billets for USA and USAF/USSF are available as well. Interested Officers should contact their respective detailer and Military Personnel Office at USNA.
Requirements
- Active duty military
- O-3 or higher
- Masters degree in a relevant field (or able to complete one in 12 to 24 months of study)
Reserve Recall
Up to 30 activated reservists are authorized to be academic instructors at USNA. Each serve for a three-year definite MPN recall. USNA Mathematics typically has 3-5 activated reservists at any one time. Many reservists in the department are career educators but many are not. Reserve Officers in our department are very successful and highly regarded at USNA.
Requirements
This is a very loose summary of eligibility and service requirements for the USNA Reserve Recall Program. Those interested should visit the USNA Reserve Recall website for more details.
- Navy Reservist O-3, O-4, O-5; however, O-2 and O-6 may apply.
- Masters degree in a relevant field by start date (no waivers)
How to apply
The annual application window typically runs from September to November. Successful applicants would start their three-year tour the following July. Visit the USNA Reserve Recall website to submit an application.
Permanent Military Professor (PMP)
The Permanent Military Professor (PMP) program was created by in 1997 to establish a cadre of career naval officers with both doctoral degrees and extensive operational experience who would instruct at one of the Navy's education institutions until statutory retirement or until released from active duty.
The Naval Academy is authorized to have up to 55 PMPs, of which 3 to 6 of them are assigned to the Mathematics Department. Previous PMPs in the Mathematics Department have had a wide range of research experience including operations research, statistics or applied mathematics/cryptography.
Those selected to the PMP program typically earn their Ph.D. over 3 years as an O-5; then finish their career at USNA as a PMP until statutory retirement, typically for a total of 8-12 years at USNA. PMPs have their own community designation with promotion opportunities to O-6.
Requirements
This is a loose summary of eligibility and service requirements for the PMP program; deviations and waivers are possible. Those interested in the PMP program should read OPNAVINST 1520.40C carefully.

- URL or IWC
- Masters degree and ability to complete Ph.D in 3 years of study (unless Ph.D. already completed)
- Able to serve as PMP until statutory retirement
How to apply
The deadline for submitting applications for consideration by the PMP selection board is typically in May of each year; though this may vary from year to year. See MyNavyHR for details.
Permanent Military Instructor (PMI)
The Permanent Military Instructor Program allows LCDRs to serve as instructional faculty at the United States Naval Academy. They serve as role models for their warfare community and as academic experts. Unlike PMPs, PMIs retain their community designation and play a crucial role in training and selecting future officers for their warfare community.
USNA is authorized up to 40 PMIs of which 3 to 6 are in the Mathematics Department. Typically, PMIs serve 6-8 years at USNA until their statutory retirement or promotion to O-5.
