Opportunities for Midshipmen
Mathematics and Operations Research majors may wish to participate in a variety of optional programs beyond the standard curriculum. Relevant links and brief descriptions for some of these programs are provided here.
Research and Scholarship Opportunities
- Research with Faculty: Learn beyond the standard curriculum and tackle problems with a faculty mentor.
- Johnson Scholars Program: Funding for up to two SMA(H)/SMP(H)/SMO(H) majors each year, in support of research activities.
- Bowman Scholars Program: Select 2/C midshipmen seeking initial service assignments in the nuclear Navy may be named Admiral Frank Bowman Scholars. The program includes a research internship, a senior-year research project, and a one-year master’s program at the Naval Postgraduate School after commissioning.
- Trident Scholars Program: Prestigious research program that allows selected midshipmen to conduct a year-long independent project under faculty supervision.
Professional Experience and Graduate School
- Summer Internships: Apply your domain-specific skills in a real-world setting. Programs typically run for one block over the summer.
- Graduate School: Consider pursuing a graduate degree (MS or PhD) after commissioning or even during 1/C.
Study Away and Exchange Programs
- Service Academy Exchange Program (SAEP): Spend a semester at another US service academy.
- Semester Study Abroad Program (SSA): (internal-link only) Spend a semester studying a foreign language or learning at a military institution in another country.
- LREC Summer Programs: (internal-link only) Spend a summer (often one block) immersed in another culture, led by one or more faculty members.
